As your business is growing, you will also experience different ‘seasons’ where you focus your efforts.
When I am working on content marketing with my consulting clients, a very common question pops up: “I want to create a video or article on __________, does that work for my audience?”
Having a teacher’s heart, I try not to answer this question for them, but pitch it back with another couple of questions.
“What is your goal with your company?”
The answer here is usually, “I want to run ((insert revenue number)) business that creates ___________ and provides ___________ solutions to this problem ___________.
Then I say, “Okay, imagine the day-to-day operations of this business in the not-too-distant-future. Imagine the marketing engine for this business. Would your current content marketing idea work for that business?”
If so, yes, let’s do it. 👍
If not, then what would your future business do? 💁🏻♀️
It is great to break out of the day-to-day to reflect on “What is your business becoming?” Let’s align our marketing messaging and plans for that business.
Imagine that you are struggling with a bit of extra weight and you want to get in shape. Wouldn’t it be more useful to make decisions based on your future self, “Would someone who was in great shape make this choice,” rather than asking what you want to do in that moment?
I am not advocating that you lie or misrepresent your business, but I am nudging you to confidently create the marketing that reflects the best of what your business is becoming. Even if you are not in that season yet, it is still wise to prepare for it now.
Cheering you on,
Amy
